Why Bhutan

A country that measures wealth in happiness — and protects the rest.

Bhutan is not a destination you simply visit — it is a place that quietly rearranges your assumptions about what a country can be. Here are the four ideas that shape every journey we craft.

01

Carbon-Negative Kingdom

Bhutan is the only country on Earth that absorbs more CO₂ than it emits. Three-quarters of its land is under forest cover, enshrined in the constitution. Travelling here directly funds the protection of one of the world's last intact Eastern Himalayan ecosystems.

02

Gross National Happiness

Bhutan measures progress in GNH, not GDP — balancing material wellbeing, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and good governance. Every itinerary is designed around this four-pillar philosophy, so your journey gives more than it takes.

03

Living Mahayana Buddhism

Prayer wheels spin from dawn to dusk, monks debate in courtyards, and cliffside hermitages remain in active use. We open doors to private blessings, dawn ceremonies, and audiences with lamas that no group tour can access.

04

Sustainable Development Fee

Bhutan's SDF model keeps visitor numbers low and impact high. Your daily fee funds free healthcare, education, and conservation. We handle every permit and receipt — you simply arrive and breathe.

Ways to travel

Four lenses on the same kingdom.

Every traveller finds a different Bhutan. Pick the thread you'd like to pull — and we'll weave an itinerary around it. Most of our trips blend two or three.

Monasteries, dzongs & living tradition
Cultural

Monasteries, dzongs & living tradition

Walk through 17th-century dzongs that still serve as administrative seats, witness monks debate in shaded courtyards, and learn the precise mudras of a cham dance from the master himself. Bhutan's culture isn't performed for visitors — it's lived, and we open the doors gently.

  • Private dawn ceremony at Kyichu Lhakhang
  • Blessing from the 70th Je Khenpo's lineage holder
  • Thangka painting workshop with a master artist
  • Archery match with the village team
Where we travel

Six valleys, six ways to wake up.

Bhutan is small but vertically vast — a 90-minute drive can carry you from subtropical orange groves to alpine yak pastures. These are the valleys we keep coming back to.

Paro
Western Bhutan2,200 m

Paro

Home to Tiger's Nest Monastery, the National Museum, and Bhutan's only international airport — a green valley of apple orchards and 17th-century fortresses.

Best for: First-time visitors
Thimphu
Western Bhutan2,320 m

Thimphu

The world's only capital without a traffic light. Browse the weekend market, attend a Tashichho Dzong ceremony, and watch archers aim 145-metre shots.

Best for: Culture & city life
Punakha
Western Bhutan1,200 m

Punakha

The old winter capital, where two rivers meet at the dazzling Punakha Dzong. Warmer, lower, and lush with rice paddies and orange groves.

Best for: Photography & heritage
Bumthang
Central Bhutan2,800 m

Bumthang

The spiritual heartland — four valleys stitched together by ancient temples, hidden lakes, and the legacy of Guru Rinpoche's meditations.

Best for: Spiritual seekers
Phobjikha
Central Bhutan3,000 m

Phobjikha

A wide glacial valley that hosts the entire population of black-necked cranes each winter. Gangtey Monastery watches over the marsh from a hillock.

Best for: Wildlife & nature
Trashigang
Eastern Bhutan1,150 m

Trashigang

The easternmost hub, where the Merak-Sakteng nomads still trade in salt and yak wool. The Trashigang Dzong leans over the Gamri Chhu.

Best for: Off-the-grid travel
Masked cham dancer performing at a Tshechu festival in Bhutan
Festival Series · Sep–Oct

When the dancers
descend from the mountains.

Each autumn, masked cham dancers re-enact the triumph of wisdom over ignorance in monastery courtyards across Bhutan. We hold reserved grandstand seats at the Thimphu, Wangdue, and Punakha Tshechus — and the dance master explains each piece before it begins.

Travellers' Words

6,400 travellers, one quiet promise.

We don't ask for reviews — they arrive anyway. Here are four voices from the past season.

"Our guide Tshering opened doors we didn't even know existed — a private blessing at Kyichu Lhakhang, a hot-stone bath in a farmhouse, a long conversation with a 92-year-old weaver. Nine days, and we are still talking about it."

Maya & Ravi Iyer

Bangalore, India · 9-day Cultural Heritage

"I came for the Jomolhari trek. I left having sat with a yak herder's family at 4,100m as they roasted barley over an open flame. The altitude was hard. Everything else was effortless."

Helena Brandt

Munich, Germany · 11-day Jomolhari Trek

"The festival timing was perfect — we had grandstand seats, the dance master explained each cham before it began, and the dawn unfurling of the thongdrel was something I will carry for the rest of my life."

Daniel & Aiko Park

Vancouver, Canada · 8-day Festival Circuit

"As a solo female traveller I was nervous about a 14-day eastern Bhutan loop. Druk Yul matched me with a guide who felt like a sister by day three. Eastern Bhutan is magic — and practically empty of tourists."

Priya Anand

London, UK · 14-day Eastern Bhutan
